Polestar 2 Pre-Purchase Inspection | Sydney & Melbourne
12-volt auxiliary battery under the front bonnet of an electric car

Model guide · 2021 – present

Polestar 2 inspection.

A genuinely well-built car that depreciated hard, which makes the used ones interesting. The catch is that a lot of the early cars were demonstrators and press vehicles, and a lot of the early issues were fixed by software the seller may never have had applied.

By the EV Inspection team · Updated 2 August 2026

On a Polestar 2 the software and recall status is as important as the mechanical condition. Several early issues were addressed by updates and service actions — free to have done, but only if someone booked the car in. We check the VIN against outstanding work every time.

Which one are you looking at?

Single and dual motor variants, with a significant powertrain revision for the 2024 model year. Which one you are looking at changes both the driving experience and the checks.

Polestar 2 variants in the Australian used market.
Variant Battery What it changes
Standard Range Single Motor~69 kWhFront-wheel drive. The value pick — check tyre and suspension wear.
Long Range Single Motor~78 kWhThe sweet spot for range. Confirm real capacity rather than the quoted figure.
Long Range Dual Motor~78 kWhFaster and heavier. Brakes, tyres and suspension get more attention.
2024 onward (rear-drive)~82 kWhRevised powertrain and efficiency. Mostly still in warranty.

What goes wrong on a Polestar 2

A solid car with a software-heavy start. Most of these are cheap to resolve and expensive to ignore.

01

Outstanding software and recall work

Early cars were subject to service actions and updates addressing drivetrain and system behaviour. They are free, but they need booking. We check the VIN against outstanding work and confirm the firmware version on the car.

02

12-volt drain and no-wake faults

A recurring complaint, particularly on cars that sit unused for stretches. Symptoms look catastrophic and usually are not. We test the 12-volt system under load rather than reading a resting voltage.

03

Ex-demonstrator and press car history

A large share of early Australian cars were demos. That often means low kilometres, hard early use and a service history that reads oddly. Not disqualifying — but it should be reflected in the price.

04

Brakes and tyres on dual motor cars

Heavy, quick and easy to drive hard. Uneven wear, worn bushes and mismatched tyres across an axle are all worth finding before you agree a number.

05

Infotainment and connectivity quirks

Screen freezes, connectivity dropouts and app-related faults, mostly resolved by later software. We confirm the system cycles properly rather than accepting that it booted.

The battery on this one

Polestar 2 packs have a good durability record, and most cars in the market still hold manufacturer battery cover. That makes a dated, VIN-stamped state of health reading unusually valuable on these — taken while cover is live, it is evidence you can act on.

We read usable capacity, cell voltage spread and thermal history directly, then confirm the pack under load. Expected figures for the car's age are on normal degradation; the cover position is on the battery warranty page.

Buying one in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne

Steep depreciation makes these good buying, and it also means a lot of cars are being sold quickly by owners who never engaged with the software side. Ask when it last saw a dealer, and check the recall position yourself rather than taking a seller's word for it. An ex-demo car with everything applied and a healthy pack is one of the better value used EVs in this market.

We inspect on site across Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan and the Redlands — at a private seller's home, a dealer forecourt or a workplace car park. Report in writing inside 24 hours, then a call to walk you through it.

Questions we get about the Polestar 2

Are Polestar 2 batteries reliable?

The packs have a good record, and most cars in the Australian used market still hold manufacturer battery cover. The more common Polestar 2 issues are software and 12-volt related rather than high voltage battery failures.

How do I check for outstanding Polestar recalls?

Ask the seller for the service record and confirm the VIN with a Polestar dealer. We also check recall and update status as part of every inspection and put it in the written report.

Is an ex-demo Polestar 2 a bad buy?

Not necessarily. Demonstrators often have low kilometres and complete dealer history, but they can have had hard early use and an unusual service pattern. It should be disclosed and reflected in the price.

Why do Polestar 2s have 12-volt problems?

Like most modern EVs the low voltage system runs a great deal of the car, and a weak 12-volt battery produces alarming symptoms — failure to wake, failure to charge, multiple warnings. It is inexpensive to resolve and easy to test properly beforehand.

Good car. Check the paperwork behind it.
