Tesla Model Y inspection.

Newer than the Model 3 and mostly still inside warranty, which changes what matters. On a Model Y the questions are less about wear and more about what has already been repaired — and whether the paperwork says so.

By the EV Inspection team · Updated 2 August 2026

Model Ys are young enough that most faults are still someone else's problem. The exception is accident repair: on a car where the battery pack is integrated into the floor structure, a poorly documented rear or underbody repair is a far bigger deal than it looks.

Which one are you looking at?

Australian deliveries began in 2022, with a facelift arriving in 2025. Pack chemistry varies by variant, and it changes how the battery has to be assessed.

Model Y variants seen in the Australian used market.
Variant Battery What it changes
RWDLFPCharges to 100% by design. Needs a diagnostic read — app estimates are unreliable on LFP.
Long Range AWDNMCMore heat to manage in this climate. Cooling system and thermal history get extra attention.
PerformanceNMCHarder life as standard. Brakes, tyres, suspension and any track history.
Facelift (2025 onward)LFP / NMCMostly still in warranty. Focus shifts to repair history and options fitted.

What goes wrong on a Model Y

A short list, because the cars are young. Two of these are expensive to get wrong.

01

Water in the boot and tailgate

A recurring complaint. Seals, drain paths and the tailgate itself are worth checking properly — lift the boot floor and look for staining or corrosion around the fasteners rather than trusting a dry-day inspection.

02

Undocumented structural repair

The pack is integrated into the floor. A repair to the rear or underside that has not been done to specification affects both crash performance and the battery warranty position. We measure paint depth right around the car and inspect the tray and mounting points from underneath.

03

Heat pump and climate faults

Less dramatic in Queensland than in cold climates, but a heat pump that is not working properly still shows up as poor cabin cooling and, more importantly, compromised battery thermal management. We check operation and stored climate faults on every one.

04

Suspension knocks and bushes

Heavier than the Model 3 and firmer with it. Knocks over speed humps, uneven inner-edge tyre wear and previous alignment work all point the same direction.

05

Ex-fleet and ex-novated cars

A lot of Model Ys came into the market on novated leases and are now hitting three years old in bulk. Most are fine. Some have spent three years parked outdoors at 90% charge in full sun, and the pack shows it.

The battery on this one

Most Model Ys still hold manufacturer battery cover, which makes a measured state of health figure unusually valuable: a reading taken while the warranty is live is evidence you can act on, and one taken after it expires is just bad news. If the pack is near the capacity floor, that is worth knowing before you buy, not after.

We read the pack directly, check cell balance and confirm charging behaviour on a live AC session. What counts as a good number for the car's age is on normal degradation, and how cover works is on the battery warranty page.

Buying one in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne

Supply here is strong and rising as the first wave of lease cars comes back, so there is little reason to accept a car with an unexplained repair history. Cars from the Gold Coast and bayside suburbs deserve a closer look at underbody corrosion; anything that spent a wet season parked low deserves an isolation resistance check before anything else.

We inspect on site across Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan and the Redlands — at a private seller's home, a dealer forecourt or a workplace car park. Report in writing inside 24 hours, then a call to walk you through it.

Questions we get about the Model Y

Is a used Model Y still under battery warranty?

Most are, given how recently they arrived in Australia. Confirm the start date from first registration rather than the build plate, and check the distance limit as well as the years — high-kilometre cars can run out of cover early.

Does a repaired Model Y lose value?

A properly documented repair by an approved shop is manageable. An undocumented one, particularly at the rear or underside where the pack forms part of the structure, affects both safety and resale, and it is the main thing we look for on these cars.

Do you check for water leaks in the boot?

Yes. We lift the boot floor, check the seals and drain paths, and look for staining and corrosion around fasteners rather than relying on how dry it looks on the day.

How long does a Model Y inspection take?

Around two to three hours on site depending on the package, including the battery diagnostic, a road test and a live charge session. The written report follows inside 24 hours.

Newer car. Same questions worth asking.
