Buying an EV on the North Shore?
This is where Sydney’s EV ownership started, so the used stock here skews older than the metro average. That is not a warning — a well-kept, garaged, home-charged car ages slowly — but an eight-year-old pack behaves nothing like a three-year-old one, and the gap between a good example and a tired one widens every year. Measurement is the only way to tell them apart.
Long single-owner ownership is common, and it usually comes with real service history. We check it against the car: recall completion, software status, any high-voltage work and whether the battery warranty still has time and kilometres left on it for you.
The terrain does one useful thing. Hilly North Shore driving means heavy regenerative braking and very light friction brake use, so rear discs corrode and calipers seize on cars that rarely touch the brake pedal. It is cheap to fix and easy to miss.

What we see here
What older, well-kept cars need checked.
Pack age, not just kilometres
Calendar ageing is real. An eight-year-old garaged car can still be excellent — but only the measured figure proves it.
Warranty runway
Battery warranties expire on years or kilometres, whichever comes first. We confirm exactly what is left for you.
Seized rear brakes
Heavy regen and hilly driving means friction brakes barely get used. Corroded discs and sticking calipers are common here.

New to EVs? Start with the battery health guide and the used EV checklist.
Is an older EV worth buying?
Often, yes — if it has been garaged, home charged and driven regularly, which describes a lot of North Shore cars. What matters is the measured state of health and how much battery warranty is left, not the year on the plate.
How much battery degradation is normal at eight years?
Broadly, most mainstream liquid-cooled packs sit somewhere in the low-to-mid eighties as a percentage of original capacity by then, with real spread either side depending on climate and charging habits. Our degradation guide sets out the ranges, and the inspection gives you the actual number for the car in front of you.
Do you cover Hornsby, St Ives and Pymble?
Yes. The full suburb list is above, and anywhere else on the North Shore is covered with no call-out fee.
Do you check the rear brakes?
Yes, and it matters more on the North Shore than most areas. Heavy regenerative braking on hilly roads means the friction brakes barely engage, so discs corrode and calipers seize. It is an inexpensive fix that is easy to overlook.
