Local knowledge

Buying an EV in the north?

The estates from Craigieburn through Mernda and Wollert are new enough that a garage and a home charger are close to standard. That is the best thing that can happen to a used battery — slow overnight AC charging, covered parking, none of the fast-charge cycling a city car lives on. Packs from up here often test at the top of their band.

The commute is the trade-off. Long daily distances into the city push odometers up quickly, which matters far less on an EV than on a combustion car but does load the tyres, bushes and alignment. That is where we look hardest on a high-kilometre northern car.

Summer days run hotter here than in the bayside suburbs, and a car parked on an open driveway through a run of 40-degree days has had a harder time than one under a roof a street away. We test against what actually happened rather than an average.

What we see here

What a three-year-old estate car looks like.

Home-charged packs

Slow overnight AC and covered parking. Usually the healthiest batteries we measure in Melbourne.

Commuter wear

High but gentle kilometres. Tyres, bushes and alignment take more of it than the pack does.

Finance and payout

Cars coming off finance can still carry an encumbrance. We flag what to check before money moves.

New to EVs? Start with the battery health guide and the used EV checklist.

Do home-charged cars really have healthier batteries?

On average, yes. Slow overnight AC charging generates far less heat and stress than repeated fast charging, and covered parking removes the other main ageing factor. It is an average rather than a guarantee, which is why we still measure the pack.

Are high-kilometre commuter EVs a risk?

Much less than the same odometer on a combustion car. There is no engine or gearbox ageing out, and steady freeway running is gentle on a battery. We look harder at tyres, suspension bushes and alignment, because that is where the wear actually lands.

Do you cover Craigieburn, Mernda and Sunbury?

Yes. The full suburb list is above, and anywhere else across the northern suburbs is covered with no call-out fee.

What should I check before paying a private seller?

A finance encumbrance is the important one — a car still under finance can be repossessed after you buy it. Run a PPSR check before money changes hands. Our report covers the vehicle’s condition and history, and we tell you plainly what it does not cover.
