Local knowledge

Buying an EV on the Peninsula?

The local pattern is unusual: a lot of these cars are holiday-house vehicles that do short trips for a few weeks a year and then sit. Long idle periods at a very high or very low state of charge are harder on a lithium pack than regular driving is, so a 30,000km Peninsula car can genuinely test worse than a 90,000km commuter. Only the pack data settles it.

Salt is the second factor. From Safety Beach down through Rosebud, Rye and Sorrento, corrosion turns up around fasteners, subframe mounts and high-voltage connector housings. On an EV that last one is a safety item rather than a cosmetic one, and we check it as standard on coastal cars.

Frankston and Somerville at the top of the Peninsula are a different market again — everyday cars, home charging, longer commutes into Melbourne. Worth knowing which of the two you are actually looking at before you read anything into low kilometres.

What we see here

Why low kilometres can mislead here.

Long idle periods

Weeks parked at 100% or near empty is harder on a pack than daily driving. We read what it actually cost.

Coastal salt

Fasteners, subframes and HV connector housings on anything parked near the water.

Two markets in one

Holiday cars and Frankston commuters look the same in a listing. They are not the same buy.

New to EVs? Start with the battery health guide and the used EV checklist.

Is a low-kilometre holiday car a good buy?

Sometimes, but low kilometres alone prove very little on an EV. A car that spent months sitting at 100% charge, or slowly draining to near empty, can test worse than a well-driven commuter. We measure state of health and cell balance so you are buying on the pack, not the odometer.

Does salt air affect an electric car?

Not the battery chemistry, but it accelerates corrosion on fasteners, subframe mounts and high-voltage connector housings — and a corroded HV connector housing is a safety item on an EV. We check for it as standard on coastal cars.

Do you cover Rosebud, Rye and Sorrento?

Yes, right down the Peninsula. The full suburb list is above and there is no call-out fee inside the area.

I’m in Melbourne buying a car down here. How does that work?

We deal with the seller directly, book the access, inspect the car where it sits and send the written report inside 24 hours, then ring you to talk it through. You do not need to make the drive twice.

Don't buy a used EV blind.
